Handcrafting leather sandals is a traditional way of shoemaking that has been practiced for centuries all around the world. Come learn how to do this special craft yourself! Join Stace Fulwiler at Cattywampus Crafts for a day of sandal making. No experience is necessary. All the tools and supplies will be provided and are included in the class fee. In this workshop you will learn to make your own custom pair of sandals made from sturdy leather soles, 0.5” stacked leather heels and supple leather straps, and insoles. Together we will explore the sandalmaking process, from cutting the straps to fitting them to your own feet. Over the course of making your sandals, you will also learn the basics of leather crafting and you will become familiar with the essential tools and supplies of shoemaking. You will choose from a handful of different sandal design that are simple and easy for beginners to master. Stace will bring four different leather colors for you to choose from: black, espresso, caramel, and natural vegetable tanned leather. At the end of the day we will sand down the edges of your sandals on the belt sander, refining the fit and finishing the edges. Your will be able to walk home wearing your newly made custom leather sandals! AMAZING!!!! Just in time for spring break!

• leather crafting basics
• sandal making

MATERIALS INCLUDED • included in workshop fee
• supplies for making 1 pair of leather soled sandals
• shared leather craft tools during class

We will be cutting, kneeling, bending and standing during the sandal making process so wear something comfortable. It’s best to wear sandals as we will be getting in and out of shoes during the fitting process. Bring a water bottle and snacks to keep you going. It’s a good idea to bring a face mask if you would like to try using the belt sander at the end of class, or if you are sensitive to strong fumes (the glue we use is strong; we will be using it outside with plenty of ventilation).

TIME • 5 hours

Stace Fulwiler made her first pair of sandals 6 years ago and immediately was hooked on the creative freedom that comes from making her own shoes. Once she realized how teachable this craft was, she set out to share the skills she learned over years of trial and error. She never tires of seeing the joy students express when they are finished making their first pair of self-made sandals. She continues to experiment with new designs, materials, and shoemaking methods.  She teaches workshops in the warmer months throughout California.
