TEACHER • Sally England is a fiber artist and Michigan native currently living and working in Ojai, California. England’s work explores the ancient art form of macramé (a form of textile construction) through the use of unconventional scale, material, and composition. Using her hands as tools, the labor-intensive process is intimate and meditative as she interprets different archetypal symbols, patterns, and shapes. The results of her work are tactile and magnetizing tapestries that invite us to reconsider the artistic potential of the age-old technique. England has a diverse background as an artist and maker. She attended PNCA's Applied Craft & Design graduate program in Portland, Oregon in 2010, where she created the first of many large-scale macramé wall hangings. She went on to form Sally England Studio, a home for the custom site-specific projects that she executes for a wide array of clients and environments. Her modern macramé work has inspired many to learn (or re-learn) the art of knotting, contributing greatly to the macramé revival of today. England's fiber-based installations and wall hangings have been presented in exhibitions and environments in the U.S and abroad, as well as in numerous online and print journals. Sally is frequently commissioned to create designer fiber pieces by interior designers, hotels, and celebrities. Her work has been featured in Architectural Digest several times in just this last year! We are so lucky to have her as a local artist willing to share her process and creative eye.
