We are beyond excited to have Julie Weisenberger - creator of Cocoknits tools, patterns, and techniques - coming to Cattywampus to teach her famous Cocoknits Method Sweater Workshop! Julie has developed gorgeous techniques for knitting seamless, perfectly shaped garments. Julie has been inspired by all the great chunky knits we love wearing here in California and so she designed a new pattern using yarn from Knit Collage. It's affectionately called "Amy" after Knit Collage's founder, Amy Small. Amy will be joining us for the weekend and participating the workshop too! These are two super lovely ladies, which will make this event even more of a treat. The workshop offers you the opportunity to knit either an adult or baby sweater using the same method with different size yarn. So whichever sweater you choose to make in the workshop, you'll get the skills and techniques to make many more variations.

English Tailoring is very common in ready-to-wear. If you look in your wardrobe, chances are you will find a store-bought sweater or knitwear piece featuring English Tailored shoulders. It is a technique of finishing the shoulders which has several advantages.

  • It’s much easier to work than a traditional hand-knit sweater finish.

  • It’s neater looking because the pieces fit together like a puzzle.

  • It fits better because, like turning a heel in a sock, you knit a 3-D “pocket” that fits your shoulder.

  • It is less bulky because it moves the seam which normally sits on top of the shoulder to the back of the shoulder.

Most of Cocoknits's traditional sweater patterns are knitted using this technique and it is written into the pattern. Julie uses it for both bottom-up sweaters, which are mostly seamless, and have developed a technique for top-down sweaters, which are completely seamless. The baby sweater is a great one to practice on before doing an entire adult sweater if you think you might want a little practice first. You can decide if it’s a technique you like and wish to use in the future.

In class, we will CO and knit top-down and seamlessly the yoke of a practice cardigan (or pullover sweater if you prefer). We should be able to get to the underarms in class, but either way, instructions are included for you to finish the lower half of the cardigan at home. You will have time in class to learn how English tailoring works.
